You’ve modified your car.
Maybe you changed the suspension, installed window tint, added accessories, or made changes that affect the way your vehicle looks or performs.
The modification may even have passed LTA inspection.
But there’s another question you need to ask:
Did you tell your insurer?
In Singapore, motorists are expected to declare vehicle modifications to their insurer. This applies even if the modification has passed LTA’s inspection requirements.
Why?
Because modifications can change the risk profile of the vehicle. Your insurer may take these changes into account when deciding whether to insure the vehicle and what coverage to provide.
And this is where it gets important.
If a modification was not disclosed, your insurer may repudiate a claim.
So, don’t assume that “LTA-approved” means “insurance-approved.” If you have modified your vehicle, check with your insurer to make sure the modification is properly declared and covered.
However, not every change to your car is necessarily considered a modification. Routine maintenance using like-for-like parts that meet the manufacturer's specifications is generally not considered a modification.
The simple rule?
If you've changed something about your vehicle, don't assume it's covered just because the car is legal to drive. Ask your insurer.
That small conversation before an accident could save you from a much bigger problem when it comes time to make a claim.
